Student presentation should involve no reading as evidence of their mastery of the content.

Welcome (1 minute)

"Good morning, class! Today, we're diving into the world of communication. Think about who needs strong communication skills: doctors, lawyers, teachers, and even athletes. Effective communication shapes success in every field. Let's explore how these professionals use this skill to excel. Ready to learn? Let’s get started!"

Icebreaker (10 minutes)

Sure! Here's an icebreaker:

1. **Human Bingo: Communication Professionals Edition**

1. Hand out a Bingo card to each student. Instead of numbers, the squares will have different professionals listed that use communication skills extensively (e.g., Journalist, Teacher, Lawyer, Public Relations Specialist, Therapist, Salesperson, Actor, Politician, etc.).

2. Give students 5 minutes to mingle and ask each other questions to find someone who has a family member, friend, or knows about the specific professions listed on their Bingo cards. When they find someone, they write down that person's name in the corresponding square.

3. After 5 minutes, regroup and ask who has achieved Bingo. Discuss briefly each profession listed on their Bingo cards and how communication plays a crucial role in those fields.

4. Conclude the activity by highlighting how communication is a vital skill across various professions and sets the stage for the lesson on Communication.

3. **Reflect and Share:**

Expression Exercise (20 minutes)

Activity: Architecture Rap Relay

1. **Split into Groups**: Divide students into small groups of 4-5.

2. **Identify a Professional**: Each group picks a type of professional who heavily relies on communication skills. Examples include architects, engineers, project managers, urban planners, and real estate developers.

3. **Key Concepts**: Each group writes down at least three key aspects of how their chosen professional uses communication. For instance:

- Architects: Communicating design ideas to clients, collaborating with engineers, and presenting projects.

- Engineers: Explaining complex technical details to non-technical clients, collaborating with architects, coordinating with construction teams.

4. **Rap Creation**: Each group creates a short, catchy rap (around 8-12 lines) that encapsulates the communication skills used by their chosen professional. Encourage creativity, rhythm, and rhyme.

Sample Structure:

- **Intro Line**: Introduce the professional.

- **Skill Breakdown**: Describe how they use communication in at least three specific ways.

- **Conclusion Line**: Summarize the importance of these skills.

Example for an Architect:

"We’re architects, design so slick,

Talk with clients, make ideas stick.

Collaborate with engineers, clear and sound,

Present our projects, all around town.

Communication’s the key to plan and build,

Without it, our visions unfulfilled."

5. **Rap Relay Performance**: Groups perform their raps in front of the class sequentially, creating a 'rap relay.' Each group hands over the "mic" to the next, ensuring an engaging and continuous flow.

6. **Feedback and Share**: After all raps are performed, have a brief discussion. Ask each group to share one new thing they learned about the importance of communication in their chosen profession. Allow peers to give positive feedback and highlight creative elements.

This exercise not only reinforces the importance of communication in various professions but also encourages teamwork, creativity, and public speaking.

Review (5 minutes)

Sure, here's the activity:

Activity: "Communication Role-Play Roulette"

1. **Pair Up**: Randomly pair students.

2. **Scenario Cards**: Hand each pair a card with a specific communication scenario written on it. Examples:

- Scenario 1: One person is giving feedback to a team member.

- Scenario 2: One person is persuading a friend to join a club.

- Scenario 3: One person is resolving a conflict with a sibling.

- Scenario 4: One person is delivering a presentation to a small group.

3. **Role-Play**: Each pair spends 2 minutes role-playing their scenario.

4. **Feedback Loop**: After 2 minutes, each partner provides 1 minute of constructive feedback focusing on effective communication elements like clarity, tone, body language, and listening.

5. **Switch Pairs**: If time allows, switch pairs and repeat with a new scenario.

This engages students in active practice and reflection on their communication skills.

Reflection (4 minutes)

Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Think about a conversation you had recently that went really well. What made it effective? Was it the tone of your voice, the words you chose, or how well you listened?

Now, consider a conversation that didn’t go as planned. What could you have done differently? Were there moments where better listening, clearer language, or a different tone might have changed the outcome?

I want you to jot down two things you did well in a recent conversation and two areas where you think you could improve. Visualize how you might use the strategies we discussed today to make those improvements.

Finally, share with a partner one strength you have in communication and one area you want to work on. Listen to their feedback and offer yours as well.
